The support for the Committtee's initialtive to invite Deaf Sailing Queensland to set up home at HYC and the commitment to help them develop thir sport has been overwhelming both inside and outside the Club. However it is not just like inviting the Unversity sailors to the Club; deaf people do work differently and we need to know how to work with them towards succcess. It may be something as complex as socio ecomic issues or as simple simple as language and how to communicate (beleive me not so simple as I cannot follow Auslan at all; but we need to be aware before we start working with them.

Neil Wood has offered to a Deaf Awareness Training program with a sailing focus just for us. It will include:

  • What is the difference between deaf and hard of hearing people?
  •  What are the different communication methods used by deaf people?
  •  What is Auslan (Australian Sign Language)? - a few signs here and there including specific sailing signs
  • Practical tips to ensure interactions with deaf people at the club are effective  and inclusive.
  • Communication skills for on the ground because good communication skills are universal, and do not just apply to deaf people!

We kick of the session at 6 and the Club will provide pizzas for all and a few softies (goffers).

RSVP is essential for food numbers. There is no cost. All are welcome
