Humpybong Yacht Club are pleased to be hosting the International Contender Australian Championship from 2-7 January 2015. In conjunction with our club sponsor, the Belvedere Hotel, we plan on delivering a regatta they will remember for years to come!
Registration will commence on Friday 2nd January 2015, with approximately 25-30 boats expected, with some travelling from as far away as Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Townsville. The quality of the fleet has improved with the 2014 World Championship held recently at Lake Macquarie near Newcastle seeing Australians first, second, third, fifth, eighth and tenth out of the top 10 placegetters.
There will be 2 races per day from Saturday through to Wednesday with a Presentation Dinner on Wednesday night, 7th January.
Humpybong Yacht Club uses TackTracker live tracking for all of our major events. This tracking system allows anyone in the world to watch the race unfold. Our tracking page also includes sailor bios and twitter tracker with live comments from the event.
About the Contender
The Contender is a high performance racing dinghy, light, fast, spectacular. A single hander, where the helmsman controls the boat from the trapeze wire to balance the forces from the large sail. Its excellent performance in stronger winds and waves reflects its Australian origin.
The International Contender was designed by Bob Miller (Ben Lexcen) of Australia 2 fame and glory, as a “contender” for the single handed dinghy Olympic class (which was ultimately retained by the Finn class at the time).
For the last 40 years, the Contender has been the only high performance single-handed dinghy that offers international racing in competitive fleets. Worldwide, about 2,400 boats have been built and sailed in 17 countries.
