On the weekend of the 29th and 30th April the Humpybong Optimist Team travelled to RQYS to compete in the 2017 QIODA State Championships. For 7 out of the 8 kid team this was their first major regatta.
In the Green fleet the Humpybong kids got to experience the thrill of racing in a bigger fleet. Our sailors got to experience a range of sailing conditions from 3kts in flat water to 15kts and 1m swell. Hannah (15th), Celeste (14th) and Hailey (11th) finished the regatta with smiles on their faces and James even managed to make it onto the podium in second place.
In the Intermediate fleet Mats finished the first day in first place before the stronger winds on day two pushed him down the table to finish in fifth. (Not bad for a first timer!) Jack (15th), Connor (12th) and Wytse (8th) had mixed results amongst the 17 boat fleet in the challenging conditions on the outer course.
If you child would like to be part of the Humpybong Optimist Team then please talk to Matthew or, better yet, have your child ask any of our state championship sailors about their experiences.
