The past weekend our Humpybong Optimist Racing Team travelled to Lake Cootharaba to take part in the annual All-Boats Regatta.
The turnout for the junior fleet was fantastic with a trailer load of lease boats left lying around from the recent Open Bic titles at Southport adding to the fleet. Over 23 kids took to the water across the weekend including 4 Tackers graduates from Humpybong. The racing was run in two fleets; the green fleet on a small triangle course and a novice fleet on a reach and return course.
Unfortunately the event coincided with the heaviest rain in recent memory and racing on the Saturday was drenching with only one race completed in the driving rain before the kids were forced to return to shore.
On the Sunday the weather cleared and we were able to get six races completed. The westerly winds were a challenge with the wind shifting up to 90 degrees at times and the strength being all over the place. Given the challenges, all of our sailors handled themselves well.
Morgan “Rocket” Roberts and Jack “Attack” Johnson traded positions at the back of the fleet all weekend but managed to finish most races with a smile. “Shark” Finn Larson showed continually better results across the weekend and for his efforts was presented the Improvement Award by the Race Committee. Bryce”nado” Burke was the Optimistic hero of the weekend with consistent results in the middle of the much slipperier Open Bic fleet.
All four young sailors had a great time and we look forward to seeing the team expand this season as more kids complete their Tackers classes.
PS: There were a few adults sailors from Humpybong at the regatta as well. They only got three races finished but Lou finished in third in the light conditions!
